“Only Murders in the Building” Editor Matthew Barbato, Joins Manhattan Edit Workshop as Artist in Residence

Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWShop) is thrilled to announce that renowned editor Matthew Barbato, celebrated for his work on “Only Murders in the Building” and “Lessons in Chemistry,” will join as the first Artist in Residence for the first Six Week Art of Editing Intensive of 2025. Barbato will bring his extensive expertise in film and television editing, providing students with an exceptional opportunity to learn from a leading industry professional.

During his residency, Barbato will delve into how working with seasoned editors has influenced his career. He will also provide valuable perspectives on his experiences editing period television series and feature films, giving participants a well-rounded understanding of the challenges and opportunities in various formats.

Matthew Barbato is an American editor, producer, and director with over two decades of filmmaking experience. Most recently, he returned to season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” after previously editing season 1 of the show.

Beyond “Only Murders in the Building,” Matthew has a diverse range of editing credits on several award-winning television series across comedy and drama, including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “The Good Place,” “Veep,” “High Fidelity,” and “Dave.” His other recent credits include Disney +'s “American Born Chinese,” Netflix's “The Kominsky Method” and Peacock's “Apples Never Fall.”

Initially, Matthew's professional career took off in 2001, when his work on “Trauma: Life in the E.R.” received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing for a non-fiction program.

Matthew's professional credits are not limited to the editing sphere; his varied career includes shooting and directing verité – as is evident in Anthony Bourdain's first television series, “A Cook's Tour,” for which he acted as camera operator and director.
