Editor Michael Kahn, ACE Discusses the Most Difficult Scene to Cut from "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

Michael Kahn, ACE has won three Academy Awards® for his editing of films directed by Steven Spielberg: "Schindler's List," "Saving Private Ryan" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." He has also received nominations for "Lincoln," "Munich," "Fatal Attraction" (for which he won a British Academy Award), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Empire of the Sun.' Kahn has worked on a wide variety of films, including "Jurassic Park," "Amistad," "War Horse," "Alive," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Minority Report," 'The Color Purple," "The Goonies," "Poltergeist, War of the Worlds," and "The Adventures of Tin Tin." He also won an Emmy for his work on the miniseries "Eleanor and Franklin." Up until his last few projects, Michael was one of the last editors to consistently use actual film to edit when he collaborated with Spielberg. In 2011, he became the recipient of the American Cinema Editors's Lifetime Career Achievement Award. About the moderator Bobbie O’Steen is a New York-based writer and film historian, dedicated to sharing the editor’s invisible art with students, professionals, and the movie-going public. She is an Emmy-nominated film editor and the author of two acclaimed books about editing entitled "Cut to the Chase" and "The Invisible Cut." It was produced by Frank Marshall and Howard Kazanjian, executive produced by George Lucas, written by Lawrence Kasdan and based on a story of George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Starring Harrison Ford, it was the first installment in the Indiana Jones film franchise to be released, though it is the second in internal chronological order. It pits Indiana Jones (Ford) against a group of Nazis who are searching for the Ark of the Covenant, which Adolf Hitler believes will make his army invincible. The film co-stars Karen Allen as Indiana's former lover, Marion Ravenwood; Paul Freeman as Indiana's nemesis, French archaeologist René Belloq; John Rhys-Davies as Indiana's sidekick, Sallah; Ronald Lacey as Gestapo agent Arnold Toht; and Denholm Elliott as Indiana's colleague, Marcus Brody.
